Just two weeks until DFWHC’s March 29 “HACKED Data” event

Just two weeks until the DFW Hospital Council (DFWHC) and Hall Render complimentary event “HACKED: The case of a hospital’s data held HOSTAGE” on Thursday, March 29 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Meadows Conference Center in Dallas.

Mark Swearingen, a Hall Render attorney who oversaw the case of a recent U.S. hospital where hackers demanded payment of $55,000 in bitcoin or they would permanently delete more than 1,000 encrypted files, will serve as keynote speaker.

Mark is an expert in health information privacy and security, including HIPAA and HITECH compliance. He regularly provides counsel on matters such as: HIPAA compliance investigations; the disclosure of health information; the creation of security policies; data breach response; and HIPAA audits.

Mark has provided services to a broad spectrum of health care organizations, including health systems, hospitals, physician practices, diagnostic imaging centers, ambulatory surgical centers and long-term care facilities. He has spoken and written nationally on numerous topics, including data breaches and electronic medical records.

You can learn more about his career here.

Mark’s seminar will detail how overseas hackers used vendor credentials to deploy ransomware and lock down a hospital’s IT system. The attack hit just before a holiday weekend as the hospital was trying to manage a busy Emergency Room filled with flu patients. Swearingen, Hall Render’s expert who specializes in health information privacy and security, was soon called to assist.
