More than 100 attendees turned out today for the 5th Annual Dallas Hunger Summit hosted by the Dallas Coalition for Hunger Solutions at the Dallas County Schools Technology and Training Center. The DFW Hospital Council (DFWHC) Foundation’s own Dr. Sushma Sharma attended as a representative of the Community Health Collaborative.

The Dallas Coalition for Hunger Solutions, created in 2012, is chaired by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson and spearheaded by the Texas Hunger Initiative and the North Texas Food Bank. Through action teams, the organization brings together community leaders who are engaged in addressing poverty and hunger and to take action in a collaborative setting.

The 2016 Dallas Hunger Summit brought national, state and local leaders together to discuss the recommendations of the bipartisan National Commission on Hunger for reducing food insecurity and increasing access to healthy food.

Speakers included Audrey Rowe, national food and nutrition services administrator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture; Jim Weill, president of the Food Research and Action Center; and Ann Beeson, executive director of the Center for Public Policy Priorities.

Coordinated by the DFWHC Foundation, the Community Health Collaborative is made up of 32 residents with expertise in public health, data analysis and strategic planning. The team is working towards understanding health and disease disparities in North Texas while creating plans to promote healthier lives.
